Rev-A-Shelf VIB-20CR Vanity Fold-Out Ironing Board Review

Are you tired of trying to figure out where to store your huge, bulky ironing board? Then a built-in one might be the ironing board for you. Built-in ironing boards, unlike the usual ones we see (portable with four “feet”), are installed in a drawer, in a closet or cabinet, or on a wall, only taken down when you need to use them. It’s usually attached semi-permanently on one end and locked on the other when not in use.

Built-in ironing boards are popular among people who live in particularly small apartments that need all the space they can save. You don’t have to look for a place to store it in, or set it up every time you need to use it. A built-in ironing board will save you space, time, and stress!

In this article, we will talk about one built-in ironing board that I have been using for the past two weeks. It’s called the Rev-A-Shelf VIB-20CR Vanity Fold-Out Ironing Board.

Features of the Rev-A-Shelf VIB-20CR Vanity Fold-Out Ironing Board

  • Convenient and easy storage
  • Set up ironing board in an instant
  • Not bulky
  • Expandable frame and fixed brackets for easy mounting in a vanity drawer
  • Chrome finish and unique ball-bearing slide system
  • Gravity lock
  • Measures 21-inch width x 19-inch depth x 4-inch height

I bought this built-in, fold-out ironing board because I needed something that would eliminate the need for extra storage space in my apartment. I also didn’t like how heavy and bulky my old portable ironing board was.  Off to the store I went and purchased this little Rev-A-Shelf ironing board. It was simple and had no-frills — I liked that. It didn’t have those fancy, flowery patterns you would often see on the fabric cover of huge ironing boards at the appliance store.

Because it looked simple and was supposedly easy to use, I had hope for this ironing board.

I followed the instructions that it came with for installing in the drawer, and it was surprisingly easy. I have never had to do anything like this before – I would usually have my boyfriend come over for technical stuff, but this time, I had to do it on my own since he was on a work trip. I was already excited to use it once I assembled it in my closet drawer because it was my first time to use a fold-out ironing board.

This was incredibly mundane, I know, but it’s fun looking forward to such things. I installed it in the third lowest drawer in my closet so I could sit down while ironing – sometimes, I’m lazy.

When I used this to iron plain button-down shirts and tops, I was happy to see that it performed well. Even though the board itself was thin and appeared to not have as much padding as most ironing boards, it did the job.

I’m happy that I no longer have to carry around a heavy ironing board across my studio apartment to iron my clothes. I don’t have to leave a narrow space between cabinets to have something to stick it in for storage. I just have to slide out my drawer and let my ironing board come out and it’s ready for me. It really is more convenient than a portable ironing board, plus I can just sit down on the floor.

However, it’s not all rainbows and butterflies. The slide-out mechanism is apparently too good to be true. It works sometimes, but most of the time, it takes a significant amount of effort to pull the ironing board out. I don’t know if it’s just the way I installed it, but sometimes the fit just seems to be wrong. This takes a point away from Rev-A-Shelf against my old, rusty ironing board.

Finally, I cannot iron my pants and skirts the way you would typically iron them with this board because of the drawer underneath. You can’t slip it over the “nose” of the ironing board. This drives me mad every time I try to do this method and it just won’t work because of this physical limitation.

Pros:

  • Simple design
  • Easy to install
  • No more need for storage
  • No need to set up every time

Cons:

  • The drawer underneath the board makes it hard to iron pants/skirts
  • The ironing board is usually hard to pull out

The Verdict:

If you need a simple slide-out ironing board that will do the job, get the Rev-A-Shelf VIB-20CR. You will no longer have to deal with storage and setup, but it has its own problems that might stress you out more.
